Replace the term 'male circumcision' with the word 'circumcision'
At the XIX International AIDS Conference (AIDS 2012) a growing number of people led by Jamie Uhrig argue that NOT enough thought has been given to the term 'male circumcision'. What exactly is meant by the term 'male' circumcision? The word 'male' is redundant. All circumcision is performed on males. There is NO female circumcision. When we use the term 'male' circumcision we imply that female circumcision also exists. Females who are subjected to genital cutting are said to have undergone female genital mutilation or cutting. Responsible professionals no longer use the term female circumcision. It is time that the institutions that lead the response begin to change the language. We appeal to the World Health Organization (WHO) and the UNAIDS to treat women with respect by replacing the term 'male circumcision' with 'circumcision'.
