I fully endorse Coláiste Feirstes call for a fit for purpose inspection service that recognises the uniqueness and indeed the beauty of our young people being taught, and the skill, commitment and professionalism of Irish teachers through the medium of Irish. The growth of Coláiste Feirste and the year on year exceptional exam results is testament to the great work that goes on at the school.

As a parent who has chosen irish medium education, I want assured by the education board that all schools are being inspected properly, this can not be done if the inspector fluent in irish.

I fully support the need for an irish speaking inspector within the Irish Speaking schools

Seems very obvious that for any kind of effective evaluation work to be made in any culture, be it French, Irish or Welsh, the bare minimum needed is fluency in the language

The professionalism of the ETI is beyond question, but it clear that the current provision for Irish language inspection requires immediate and broader in-depth staff training. If non-Irish speakers are expected to adjudicate the intrinsic worth of teaching and measure skills acquisition of pupils, appreciation of professional behaviour cannot per se be evaluated. At its core, assessment involves witnessing classroom relationships, quantifying delivery of skills, appreciating how teachers form young minds to appreciate the world and reporting on how they enjoy and benefit from their experiences within the spheres of languages, art and science and much more. This level of achievement in celebrating commonality and developing acceptance of diversity will be missed by a non-Irish speaker in the role of inspector. As a languages teacher of 30 years, with experience as head of a department for over a decade, the suggestion of improvement has always been one of the welcome strengths of the ETI. The Irish language schools are in a surprisingly inconceivable situation compared to young Welsh or Scottish counterparts. Given their decades of experience in successful Irish language provision and with ever-growing numbers, I am sure that this basic courtesy will be paid to Meánscoil Feirste's staff, governors, parents and pupils by the relevant professionals by reviewing and improving the status quo, before any subsequent future inspection can take place.

Congratulations to Coláiste Feirste on their inspection report. I agree with the view that the allocation of inappropriate personnel by the ETI would have made effective assessment near impossible. It may also raise the issue, do the appropriate personnel to assess the effectiveness of teaching and learning in the Irish Language sector exist and if they do why were they not allocated to this particular inspection? However if there were no suitable personnel the employment and appointment procedures of the inspectorate needs to be examined. The Irish Language sector is a large and important part of our education system and resources need to be allocated to the ETI to ensure they are able to assess the quality of teaching and learning in the Irish Language Sector in a professional way. This situation would never have arisen if it was in the Special Education Sector or a French or Technology department in a Mainstream Secondary School or College.

I appreciate the professionalism of the school inspectorate but think it was inconceivable that people who do not know or who can converse in the language be put in the position to give a fair assessment of the school. It's like asking a person with no English to access an English speaking class. Truly amazing.
