SIGN and offer a much needed swimming class to a child in Greece.
In Ancient Greece, where fishing and sailing
were very important, both boys and girls knew how to swim and dive well. Greece
has a great deal of islands, 200 of them are inhabited nowadays. Three main
Seas, the Mediterranean, the Aegean and the Ionian surround the country. The
above give us thousands of square kilometers of coastal areas, although at least 300 people died in the greek seas last
year, because of their poor swimming skills. According to latest official data from the Greek Coast
Guard, 150 people drowned in Greece from June 1st until July 27th 2012.
This is a record number considering that during the same period last year, 101
deaths from drowning were recorded. Public schools do not offer swimming
lessons to their students, due to the lack of the proper facilities. On the other hand,
children learn how to play basketball or soccer. Swimming is one of the first
spots that should be practiced in a country of the form of Greece, not only for
leisure but also for health purposes. Swimming lessons, on the contrary are
only available through private sports clubs, which makes them inaccessible to a
child from a middle class family background.
