Chinese is an extremely important to me. Being an adopted Chinese American I have always struggled with figuring out who I am and how I fit into society. Learning the Chinese language and learning about culture is what has made me discover the role my ethnicity has in my life and how proud I am to be Chinese. One factor that helped me chose Gustavus is the option of continuing Chinese. I have attended all of the cultural events on campus and the celebration of culture on this campus has always been amazing. Because the language department is connected to the GCC, taking away chinese essentially takes away that organization. The problem is not the lack of interest in East Asian language/ education. It’s the lack of levels and opportunities to major/minor. With the increasing amount of high school’s who offer Chinese, College should be able to accommodate for that.

Very important to keep this class because the Chinese culture is vastly different than ours but also a foundation of so many other cultures.
