I wanted the residents with children in Palo Alto residing on Waverley street between Oregon Expressway and Nevada and the surrounding area to sign this petition.. With all of the development near California Avenue and downtown Palo Alto, we've noticed a sharp increase in automotive traffic on Waverley Street to Oregon Expressway and from Oregon Expressway onward through Waverley to California Avenue. As you can imagine, with lots of children residing in this area, one can only imagine that it makes this area much more dangerous for them. Each day, we watch children get on their bicycles and launch onto Waverley where one is often confronted with cars that accelerate rapidly from California Avenue to Oregon without any regard for people leaving their driveways from their houses as they rush on their daily commutes. In addition, one also has to manage the surprise traffic from the other direction caused by the wavy nature of the street and the blind spots associated with it that makes it even harder for youngsters to negotiate safety confronted with this two-way speeding traffic. Last I counted there were 20 kids living in this small area which I believe is worthy of at least three speed bumps and multiple Children at Play signage. You may even want to consider closing off the street at Oregon to preserve the residential aspect of this area which the people who live here and the students who attend the surrounding schools most certainly deserve. Twice a day, there is a marvelous parade of young cyclists either going to or leaving Jordan Middle School cycling down California Avenue as well (often to the Bryant Street bike path or from it). The last thing they need to deal with is the cross traffic of fast cars with their last-minute stopping that are trying to speed through a residential area because they chose the wrong street or are trying to avoid congestion. I would also like to add that there are many elderly people who live in this area and park on Waverley. It's sad to watch as they enter the driver's side of their cars facing the street with the daily worry that they may get sideswiped. On another note, It is often the case that if you are pulling out of your driveway onto an empty street to leave your house, and you happen to make eye-contact with an oncoming car that suddenly appears, more often than not that car will reluctant to slow down and give you the courtesy of exiting even though you got there first. More often than not, they will accelerate through this situation in the hopes that they get past first. We implore you to look at this and add the needed speed bumps and signage to remedy the problems. We all know that Waverley Street is not a highway, we wish the cars that drove by here knew it too. Kindly see the response to the entered in petition to understand why we need signatures: "Thank you for bringing this issue to our attention. In order for the City to install a speed hump (or any other traffic control feature) on the roadway segment, all of the following requirements need to be met. The requirements include, the roadway must be designated as a safe routes to school corridor per the City’s guidelines, next the City would need to perform a speed and volumes survey to determine if the drivers are exceeding the roadway speed limit threshold to warrant a speed hump and lastly we would require a signed petition from greater than 50% of the residents on the roadway segment or on streets required to use the segment (i.e. residents that live on a cul de sacs required to use street segment) to install a speed hump or any other traffic control feature. The City is currently going through this evaluation process and will update this request based on our findings. Thank you for your request.
