The village council finally voted to allow hens within our limits. It has been a long and draining process but we reached the finish line. I am exhausted by the fight but relieved that we can finally bring our chickens home.

I am asking for signatures to try and change the village ordinances 664 an update of ordinance 94.46 that was updated June 1983 for Camden Ohio that states we can not own hens on our residences inside the village limits.
I proposed to the village council to allow the community to own a small number of hens like 6-12, NO ROOSTERS at our residence. If we agree to keep the area clean, well taken care of and not allow them to run loose outside of our properties, but kept inside proper pinned in areas/coops. As of 2/16/23 and I am awaiting an answer.
There are more and more cities, towns, and villages that are allowing hens to be kept at private residences for pets or personal usages. In fact there was in recent years House bill that was requesting to change Ohio laws to allow small livestock, but it ended up stalling. https://www.legislature.ohio.gov/legislation/132/h...

We hit two hundred and fifty signatures today. It has been a long grind and I am exhausted by the pushback but seeing so many neighbors agree with me keeps me moving forward.

Hens should be allowed in town. They aren't "loud" and so long as they are cleaned up after, then it should be good for the earth, the economy and EGG prices locally.
Allowing residents to have a small flock of chickens is in line with being self-sufficient. We all need to be able to depend on ourselves more and also give more children an opportunity to learn to care for livestock.
We did this in our small town and got the city council to change the ordinance. It can be done!
A Chicken can eat on average of 80 ticks in an hour, just one of many perks to owning chickens
I think no more than 6 chickens would be appropriate for smaller areas such as those in a town or city. This will allow plenty of room but not over crowd them (which will lead to disease). If in a fenced in area, I would recommend it be a tall fence (6 feet) or in an area with a roof as they can jump short distances. This will decrease the likelihood that one will find its way to the street and be injured, killed or cause sn accident.
