Chickens for All in Redlands

When we lived in San Diego, small backyard flocks (up to 6 hens) were allowed. Building a coop and caring for the chickens was a family project. Not only our son but also the neighborhood kids loved to come over to feed and pet the chickens. They are quiet and friendly and a great addition for a healthy garden. Their waste is managed similar to how we keep cats and dogs, by regularly cleaning it up (and they create far less waste that is actually beneficial, not hazardous like other pet waste). As a bonus, we often had enough eggs to share with neighbors. Please consider this change. The ability to have a small flock of backyard chickens in the City of Redlands would allow interested residents to participate in the healthy and sustainable lifestyle practices that are currently embraced by many cities throughout California. Chickens are great for citrus trees, and will positively reflect the agricultural roots and neighborly character of Redlands.

Given the circumstance supply shortages and what’s happening lately geo politically with food shortages this is more important than ever. I don’t see how this is even a question in the city of Redlands

We are touring homes to purchase in Redlands and researching this rule has me feeling disappointed. We were considering purchasing a home on a .25 acre lot, but now we are thinking of moving to a surrounding city to fulfill our dream of having vegetables and a few chickens in the backyard. At the very least, we will consider a smaller property. Such a bummer! Hope the rule can be changed for people who know how to maintain their animals.
