The one and only problem with this pub is the management.

It would be such a shame to see yet another village pub close! I used to work at the chequers and it holds many happy memories! Keep it open!!!

Was shocked when I heard what was going to happen to this community hub. My family have been in this little village for nearly as long as the pub has been here. They would be turning in their graves if they knew that this was to close for know good reason. The Chequers is the last communal meeting place that people can go and socialise with all age groups if it was managed as it should be, a public house that welcomes everyone. I can genuinely state that this would be devastating for this village to lose its local pub. Please listen to all the people who sign this petition, so many people cannot be wrong.

Asset striping at its best. Publicly funded improvements, but no improvement for the public? To run a business into the ground for financial gain, with no intention of providing the services applied for, is tantamount to fraud the public purse. To lose a historical and once thriving village public house is a travesty. They have no loyalty or allegiance to the village. #shame

As a former long-term employee of the pub, I can honestly say that it is an integral part of village life when it is run properly. Please don't let it close.

The only reason this great pub isn't successful is that the current management drive away a large number of people by unusual opening hours and a overt lack of respect for their patrons.

The Chequers should remain a pub for all inhabitants of Elston and surrounding villages, both present and future. Only a few years ago the pub was busy most nights of the week, offered food, regular entertainment and most importantly, a friendly welcome. This can easily be achieved again, proven locally by such quality offerings as The Staunton Arms. We need our village pub and the employment it can offer to locals as well as the social aspect that a small rural village needs to keep a sense of community.
