Having worked at the pub I think a lot of both of the owners but we had our wedding reception their and the thought of it gone forever is sad news if only a buyer would have come along and all parties would be happy!

I agree to a certain extent with Michelle McCalman that some of the comments in here are beyond the pale & unnecessary: I would ask though Michelle, have you been to the Chequers recently?. That said I am very aware of the opinions of the residents of Elston with regards to landlord, his opinion of them and the way in that the pub is run. This though is not a campaign or a witch hunt against them personally, it is a campaign to maintain the pub as a pub for our community, which along with the shop and the school help make Elston such a great place to live.

I think a village like Elston is big enough to sustain a profitable pub and restaurant and if done in the right way it could attract people from other near by villages and towns. It just needs the right people behind it!

I cannot believe some of the comments I am reading. Shame on you Elston. I expect many of you are in business yourselves and understand that you simply cannot go on and on funding a business that isn't earning its keep. How many of you are guilty of making this happen by not using your local pub? Well you have lost it now and blaming the couple that own it will not endear them to stay open for you and who would?

Having grown up in Elston for all of my life it would be an incredible shame to see The Chequers closed down. I have spent many happy Friday nights with my family and friends there, and to lose such a valuable asset to the community would be detrimental to villagers, now and in the future.

When it was a thriving village pub, The Chequersplayed a big part in getting so many of Elston's current residents to the village - it would be a huge loss if it disappeared.

A village should always have a pub! A pub is a great place for people to meet friends, family, tradesmen, business people, it is and should always be the heart of a village

The Chequers Inn is a very viable village pub but to work as a business it does need to be open and welcome customers.

I like the current owners , they have always been very kind to me , but we need to keep the pub the centre peice of the village for the next generation to enjoy .

My ancestors lived in Elston some where blacksmiths one a cord winner, last time I was in the checkers I felt that they should be selling real ales also with Marstons Brewery or similar not the micro brewery, didn't rate their beer tried them all. Pu b needs sorting, they don't make the best of the rooms. This pub must be saved and the people of Elston need to support it,, Ken Bramley Western Australia
