E. Liberty Residents’ Safety Threatened by Dangerous

New Flood of Traffic from Hunter Hill Project.

The new housing development on the Hunter Hill property will result in a daily flood of more than 250 cars and trucks onto the residential street of E. Liberty if the developer’s project plans are not revised by the Charles Town Planning Department.

Current plans use E. Liberty Street as the townhouse complex’s sole outlet, despite viable alternative options. Such a huge influx of cars and trucks onto a small, residential street will create heavy traffic congestion, noise pollution and extremely dangerous intersections where traffic is turning to reach Washington Street.

More than 250 cars speeding through E. Liberty street several times a day represent a serious threat to residents, including children, who must cross the street multiple times daily to go to work or school and to play. The developers have other options: They can use the existing Hunter Hill road, which leads directly to Washington Street. They could incorporate traffic signals, circles or speed bumps at intersections to help ensure that the massive increase in the flow of traffic coming both to and from Washington to E. Liberty is safe. Thus far, they have done neither.

We, the undersigned, call on the Charles Town Planning Department and Board to take action to re-draw the site plan for the Hunter Hill Townhouse development to utilize the existing Hunter Hill road to exit the Townhouse traffic onto Washington Street and leave E. Liberty Street as Emergency Vehicles only access.
