Chapman Law Alumni: John Eastman Must Go

Eastman is an embarrassment to the school. How are we supposed to defend our degree when he is out there doing this? Get him off the faculty.

He must be stripped of retirement benefits

John Eastman helped incite a failed insurrection at the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday, January 6th. He must be fired.

John Eastman has not only participated in inciting a seditious riot against Congress leading to a violent insurrection at the nation's capitol, but has regularly advocated spurious legal claims and racist propaganda. Struppa’s weak and disingenuous statement admonishes alumni for expressing reasonable concern over the reputation of Chapman and the degrees it issues, baselessly claiming his hands are tied by the faculty manual since Eastman hasn’t been convicted. The manual is publicly available and clearly provides multiple grounds for removal beyond final conviction. President Struppa and the entire Chapman community should be embarrassed beyond measure at the racist, anti-democratic, violent rhetoric advanced and supported by Eastman. Moreover, in the face of Chapman continuing to employ and associate with this clearly incompetent and unpatriotic legal practitioner, the greater legal community may find it reasonable to judge the credibility of law degrees produced by Chapman nil when a member of its faculty continues to advance legally unsupported and unconstitutional legal theories on the world stage that numerous courts, including the highest court in our land, have all but laughed out of their courts. Eastman is an embarrassment and should be terminated for cause immediately.

I'm appalled at Professor Eastman's decision to participate in and incite the recent coup attempt at the US Capitol. As reports continue to emerge about what happened inside the Capitol building, we're learning that participants planted IEDs, brought molotov cocktails and flex cuffs, had access to detailed maps of the underground tunnel system, erected a gallow, chanted "Hang Mike Pence," murdered a police officer, and more. What we witnessed on January 6 is shameful and all participants, including Professor Eastman, should be held accountable for their actions. Professor Eastman should not be allowed to continue hus association with Chapman Law.

You need to change the date. You have the wrong year.

He is a disgrace to our country and Chapman.

Professor Eastman has had this coming for a long time. I don’t tell people I went to Law School there because of him.

Please remove John Eastman immediately. He is soulless, self-serving, unethical, and hypothetical. It is a disgrace that he taught me Constitutional law. He knew that what he did was wrong but did anyway for money and prestige. Disgusting!

Reasonable minds may differ on political issues, but reason clearly does not factor into John Eastman's actions of late. Between the filing and pursuit of multiple lawsuits known to Eastman to be entirely predicated on falsehoods, lies, and disinformation, and his very well reported call to action which incited violence and murder in Washington DC, Eastman has shown he is unfit to represent Chapman, teach students, or practice law. Chapman President Daniele Struppa has been noncomittal about punishing Eastman, deferring to the Faculty Manual's policies. If the Faculty Manual does not recognize that inciting violence, recurrent malicious falsehoods, and sedition as offenses deserving immediate termination, then the manual is clearly lacking. Eastman is complicit in heinous crimes, and Chapman University must immediately and totally sever any and all connections with him. President Struppa refers to the university's work on advancing "diversity, equity, and inclusion," but when given the opportunity to put words to action, President Struppa's platitudes fall flat. As Elie Wiessel (a frequent guest speaker on the Chapman campus) has said, "We must always take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented." Additionally, "There may be times when we are powerless to prevent injustice, but there must never be a time when we fail to protest." Here, Chapman University feigns powerlessness in order to remain "neutral" in favor of oppression. This is unacceptable. I am signing this petition and calling on Chapman University to terminate Eastman's employment and distance itself in any and every way possible from his reprehensible behavior.

I remember being shocked by John Eastman’s public statements at the Law school while a law student. His hate-filled points of view made me uncomfortable as a student. I cannot imagine how current students must feel. Dean Parlow should take a close look at John Eastman’s full record of conduct and take appropriate action at this time.
