A few weeks ago Mattie Montgomery spoke in chapel and the hearts of half of the student body were softened and challenged. However several hours later the passion aroused by Mattie had died down and few could even recall what they liked about it. This story has been repeated time and time again in Spring Arbor Chapels. Students have the potential to be deeply influenced by the lessons and challenges presented in chapel but many are forced to immediately clear their minds of it. Having 30 minutes after chapel before classes start would give students time to discuss and process the messages presented to them. Too many chapels have been distorted from times of growth into cool, one time experiences that do not change us, but give us momentary ecstasy because we have classes directly after. If our desire to be a community of learners extends beyond academics and overflows into a desire to learn what it means be effective Christians in the modern world then may that be shown by our daily schedule. We entreat you to remind Spring Arbor University students what we are about by devoting our most important resource to it. Time. We show what is important to us by how we spend the hours in our days and the minutes in our hours. It is no secret to educators that a human being needs time to soak things in to learn them. Hours of our time is spent hearing lectures then studying, then hearing more lectures because everyone know that to learn one most give up time. We ask that the same level of priority be given to spiritual growth by having a 30-40 minutes period after chapel where nothing is planned and students are encourage to soak in what was said.
