Changes for Inmates: Shortening Sentences
According to the American Civil Liberties Union, As of November 2013, there are 3,281 inmates who are serving life sentences for commiting non- violent crimes. These inmates are left without parole, while others whom commit more severe crimes have shorter sentences.
Brazilian Prisons have been adopting new ideas to help inmates like this take days off of their sentences by doing either self improvement work or physical labor that helps local communitites.
Brazilian inmates can now read and write well written book reports to take short amounts of time off of their sentence. They also have a program in which inmates produce energy while riding stationary bycicles ,that are used to power local streetlights.
The program is specific to each inmate, depending on crime and eveluation of wether or not they are fit for the program.
Addopting some changes into our US prison system can help save money spent on these inmates being held, as well as educate inmates who have not recieved a good education. These programs would be especially helpfull for young inmates in jail on shoplifiting and minor drug charges.
