This ludicrous form of punishment is actually taking pupils (i.e my brother) out of actual GCSE lessons for reasons that are beyond a joke, a missing pen and such. The lessons learnt from this idiotic punishment is quite obvious really, that lessons are not important. The school's duty to these students is to keep encouraging them that lessons and education is important. Try positive reenforcement for once!

The whole policy needs reviewing though.
In the February 2014 copy of the government's 'Behaviour and discipline in schools - Advice for headteachers and school staff' booklet, section 42, it says 'Schools can adopt a policy which allows disruptive pupils to be placed in an area away from other pupils for a limited period, in what are often referred to as seclusion or isolation rooms.'
Am I wrong to think that 'disruptive' is a key word here? It would make sense to me to take a child who is disrupting lessons out of the classroom so the others can continue to learn. However at Todmorden High School it clearly states in their behaviour 'pyramids' that 'seclusion' is only used after the fourth disruption. However it is used instantly if a child wears the wrong socks or ties their tie wrong and, more recently, is found to have doodled in their journal/planner.
I fully accept that a school needs good, strong, structured and rigorous discipline procedures but cannot reconcile this to the policy of taking a grade A student, with a 100% attendance record, out of the classroom and away from their education for the day for such trivial and non-disruptive matters. Surely detention, litter picking, cleaning up the plates in the canteen at lunchtime or any number of alternative punishments would be better than losing teaching time.

Valuable gcse work (on-going assessment work) is missed due to this punishmnent. good students allienated and made to feel 'bad' for simple mistaskes. An intelligent response to individual students behaviour would be more suitable. thankyou for doing thie pettition i have had numerous set to's with the school over this.

Rediculous punishment policy that does not work. When can withdrawing a diligent, non-disruptive pupil from teaching be a good idea or right? They only come to school to learn and Tod Hign is even taking that away from them for the most petty reasons.

If the kids were seriously misbehaving I would understand however you are put in seclusion if you leave your journal or pen at home even if it's the first time! We moved our daughter due to the disproportionate sanctions and the bully it culture of the management.

Putting people in seclusion for not wearing black socks is utterly farcical. Given the rise in food banks, depriving children of hot food is draconian and smacks of utter vindictiveness.

well said charlie.. I have a lot of issues with seclusion, I dont feel it is used effectively and constructively either, some kids even enjoy their time in there because they get to do naff all! I wanted to concentrate the petition on the main issues which is the hot food and no intervention work. I cannot force school to change policy on behaviour and their pyramid structure, but hopefully I can make them review those 2 big issues because they are so wrong!
