In around three months the newest edition of DSM (diagnostic statistical manual of mental disorders), will be released. This year, psychiatrists have changed the names of some of the disorders. Borderline Personality Disorder will now be known as Emotionally Unstable Mood Disorder. With all of the stigma that is already going on with having a mental illness, one would think that these "professionals" would have chosen something less drastic to name this disorder. No one wants to be labeled emotionally unstable under any circumstances, but to have Medical Professionals FORCE this label onto patients is disgusting. This petition is to show support for getting this unacceptable LABEL ripped down and rewritten for the new DSM. Please think about how you would feel if you were given this disgnosis and had to carry around this name on charts and explain it to others throughout your whole life! Thanks so much for your time and support!! <3- The Borderline Personality Disorder Community <3

The feedback coming in from people living with this diagnosis is heavy and confirms exactly why this rename is so damaging. I have been spending my time reaching out to medical boards to explain why this label is a step backward for patient care. It is exhausting work but I am not walking away from this fight.

The sheer volume of people who have stepped forward confirms exactly what I suspected about this new label. It is exhausting to fight a system that refuses to listen, but knowing I am not alone in this frustration keeps me moving.

Also one other thing before i forget, i loose my train of thought when speaking and feels like im losing my memory..the other day i called my sister(on the telephone) by my daughter's and then my son's name before actually getting her name right. My emotions are more or less in chevk at the moment because im isolating myself but when im around family it has in the past ended in angry outbursts from me storming out, threatening to never speak to them, kicking them out of my house. This happened a few times im ashamed to admit. I just need to be understood and helped.

I would not want to walk around with the title "emotionally unstable mood disorder." that's a terrible name. not only that, but every mental illness causes instability, and every mental illness can be corrected to a stable condition. So a stable person walking around with an unstable name? UNFAIR!!

Who came up with this? talk about making things worse for patients. like having a diagnosis isnt hard enough already, now we have to deal with a label that sounds like an insult. fix this please.

BPD is a medical condition(of the brain) like epilepsy, so stop stigmatizing, just like epileptics can't help having their disoder either can we!! We need medication for the most to re-balance the brain, then talking therapies can work. I know its like epilepsy because my head always hurts, i get shaky a lot, muscle pain, leg pains, shoulder pain, stiff neck sometimes, masseur told my thyroid bones to tense in my neck..migraines on and off from 18-30 yrs. Sleep all the time, nervous energy, laugh when i dont need to, hyper active in speech, but in the coversation , can't listen properly when other people speak, think they speak for too long, then when i start i never stop talking. Its a nightmare! Help us! I can do sleep studies or any other tests or research interviews! Smile inappropriately, my mum says i have weird look on my face, distorted looking i didnt know/dont know im doing this..

I would love to see borderline personality disorder's name changed to Dyslimbia! Sounds perfect and just right. Dys -from Greek means disorder/malfunction and limbia -of the limbic system of the brain, where BPD is affected. Bpd is a brain disorder first, but of course it affects the personality. This is the best name change i've heard so far! Any other name including BPD just stigmatizes the patient almost makes it sound like its completely our fault, when clearly somethings are out of our control. In Bipolar's name; in its title you can hear its a problem of the brain. PLEASE change to DYSLIMBIA DYSLIMBIA DYSLIMBIA.. Thank you, from a 32 yr old woman who is like a girl due to this condition.. who has pushed away eventually every loving relationship, untold moodiness(un-explained for the most part) angry outbursts, depression, dissociation, confusion, loss of speech, un-able to recognise familiar faces under stress, emotionally shut down, no job, no studying, had five children by 30yrs old, afraid of intimacy but then very hyper sexual towards partner, want hugs to be held by partner, afraid of being abandoned by partner, always alone,no friends, no body understands, over reactive to facial expressions, feels like everybody is staring at me, social anxiety, no ambition,no drive, to name a few.
