Judging by posts and comments on Twitter, MLSsoccer.com, and many other social media outlets and blogs, the recently announced name of Utah's new 3rd division soccer team, Real Monarchs, is disapproved of almost unanimously throughout soccer fandom. In fact, many people are simply disgusted at the poor choice of name, its obvious redundancy, and its reference to butterflies (whether or not that was intentional is not known, but either way it is bad).

The new USL Pro team will have a close association to Utah's 1st division team, Major League Soccer's Real Salt Lake, which enjoys a large and growing fan base. Both teams are owned by Dell Loy Hansen, a local business man.

Many of Real Salt Lake's fans are likely to be supporters of the new USL Pro team as well, but will be put off by the horrible choice in name. Sure, we will probably all get over it, but considering the fact that Real Salt Lake's fans are a big reason for the club's success, it is disingenuous that our opinions were not even considered when it came to naming the team.

In short, if Mr. Hansen wants us to support his clubs and represent them at games, and anywhere else by wearing team merchandise, then that club needs to return the favor by representing the fans. I don't know about you, but a team named after butterflies or a ruler in a monarchy doesn't exactly represent me. We live in a democracy, and their aren't that many Monarch butterflies in Utah anyway, even if I did want to cheer on a team named for the most docile and harmless insects I can think of.

In other words, Mr. Dell Loy Hansen, I might go to a Real Monarchs game once in a while, but if you want me to buy season tickets, change the name.

Thank you,
A concerned fan
