I am hoping to change my school's dress code. Everyday I see boys in the hall with shorts above the knees, and the rule is we cannot have shorts unless they cover or go past our knees. No one does anything about it to them- but the second a girl breaks this, we get yelled at, forced to change, or even sent home. Just today I heard a girl was dress coded because the hole in her jeans on her knee was too big. Another thing is girls wear tank tops all the time that can be a bit low cut with jackets, but the second that jacket comes off and a shoulder shows it becomes an issue. This is ridiculous- especially when our school should be supporting body positivity, why should we not be allowed to wear what we want and express ourselves? We all have knees, shoulders, and stomachs. If these parts distract someone, it is not the one wearing it who is the problem, but the person being distracted. If body parts such as shoulders and knees are distracting to you, it is you who are the problem, and that is not normal. If you are sexualizing a minor, you are the problem. We should not teach people to cover up, but teach people to respect one another and their bodies. Which is why I've decided that this needs to change- and am therefore working on finding a way to change the current dress code. All support is welcome, and I hope we can make a change together. Thank you.
