We need to change the law on Best Before. Legislation currently states that food cannot be sold after it has passed it's Best Before date. Best Before dates are an indication of food QUALITY and NOT food safety. This is not the matter for a small number of cases, such as eggs, but it is the case for most food products. These products are still safe to eat, yet they cannot be made available to the public. For example, a loaf of bread sold at 11:59pm, cannot be sold to the public at 12:00am. This is not on.

If you think about all of the people who go hungry and cannot feed themselves or their families daily, and then consider all of the edible food which must be took of the shelves, you must see that change is needed.

Food Products are legally required to display a date stamp, but a production date could easily replace a best before date. Best before dates often confuse the consumer and lead a lot of edible food products to be binned on the day of the best before date, as SOME, not all, consumers believe that the food is no longer safe to eat.

Ideally, the aim is to remove best before dates from food labelling completly, but if this is not possible, legislation needs to be changed so that food can still be sold, at reduced prices, after best before dates have passed.

In short, the law on best before needs to be changed!!
