NAFA rules for a dog receiving the Iron Dog Award are as follows:

Iron Dog Award

At CanAm 2011, Executive Director Lee Heighton unveiled the new NAFA Iron Dog Award.

A NAFA Iron Dog is a dog that has earned at least one NAFA point in ten consecutive racing years. Iron Dog plaques will be issued annually after the end of each NAFA racing year.

For all qualifying Active status dogs (i.e. dogs that have earned a point in the last 18 months), they will automatically receive their Iron Dog plaque.

_________________________________________

We the undersigned request a change in the ruling removing the words "consecutive years". Any dog that races for ten years should qualify for the Iron Dog Award. A dog being off for injury or for other reasons for a year or more should not disqualify the other ten years the dog has devoted his or her life to the sport of flyball.

im still reading through all the stories people are posting about their dogs getting injured or needing time off. it makes no sense that a lifetime of competing gets ignored just because of one break in the sequence.

im honestly so blown away by the momentum this is picking up lately. its clear so many of you feel the same way about our dogs and the time they put into this sport. lets keep this energy going because these athletes deserve the recognition regardless of a gap in their career.

I agree with the suggestion to change the rule to any 10 years, not consecutive. This recognizes the longevity without unintentionally encouraging people to run their dogs when they need a break for whatever reason, just to qualify under "consecutive".

I was very disappointed to learn that my first flyball dog couldn't qualify because I took time off to have kids - who now participate in flyball themselves. He's gone now, but for a family sport, as well as for the longevity and health of the dogs, 10 years of racing is an accomplishment, whether they are consecutive or not!

I would love to see that changed. My little poodle played over 11 years of flyball. She missed one year due to an injury but as a result did not qualify. I felt she was robbed.

Having rottweiler's racing in itself 10 years is pretty much their lifespan. I have one that if she lives till next year, it will be 10. But she was out about 18 months due to an injury. Sad she will not be eligible due to consecutive year wording.

I had a dog who raced till she was 14.5 years with a 2 year break at one point due to a move to an area with no flyball. She certainly raced for 10 years, but they weren't consecutive.

Please change "consecutive years" as this doesn't account for dogs who are ill or injured and are out for an extended period of time. Does their time spent in recovery or hard work in rehab so that they come back to the game strong not count?? It should! Ten years total please!

Any dog racing for 10 years consecutively or not should be recognized

I do not understand why the 10 years needs to be consecutive. The dog is still awesome if he/she managed to play for 10 years.
