ALL police officers are supposed to enforce and uphold the law. The vast majority do. Often, we only see negative stories. These negative accounts with police officers occur far and inbetween the millions of positive accounts that happen every second of everyday. If bad people have the ability to become cops, which in return results in fatal incidents and power abusement, which then results in crazy media coverage and riots, something has got to change. My reply to that is, we need to change the hiring process. That seems the most logical right? We need to make the hiring process more personal. We need to do extensive background investigations on applicants. We need to talk to their relatives, their friends; we need to find out who they are as people before we hire them on the premise that just because they passed the written, physical, and psychological test, they are fit for duty. The hiring process needs to become more stringent. This change will affect everyone. The police officers of this country will have more assurance that the men and women they are working with are upholding the law, and that they will be there for each other when they need it. Society will benefit from a change in the hiring process. They will see less skeptical videos, they will see less unjustified violence, and they will feel that their police officers are protecting them. With this change, I will feel that my father, a Mishawaka Police officer, is safe, from negative accusations from the endless media, and from the few bad police officers out there.
