It's pretty obvious that the time has come and passed for this logo to be eliminated. We can do better....

I wholeheartedly support changing the mascot 100% to something all of us in Guilford can be proud of. When I moved to Guilford 5 years ago, I was horrified by the present mascot. A change is way overdue, and will be healthy for everyone.

This is long overdue. What example are we setting if we aren't willing to make this simple change?

This is long overdue. Our hometown mascot is racist and certainly doesn't make it feel safe for our students who are people of color

This really should not be an "issue" that requires prolonged discussion. A mistake was made, it has been realized and should be corrected swiftly. The reason why use of the moniker and imagery are wrong has been robustly outlined elsewhere. Even in the defense of tradition, people who wield power and influence - white people - should err on the side of caution where is regards formerly and currently disenfranchised peoples. It would be great to witness an attitude of listening and reconciliation. It could be great fun to challenge the high schoolers to come up with a new mascot or moniker that everyone can be proud of and that the school, town and community can take ownership of.

We are asking that 1) the Indian mascot be changed, 2) that the curriculum be changed to incorporate lessons on anti-racism and systemic racism from K-12, 3) that the teachers be trained to lead these discussions, 4) that there be explicit ways to hold students and teachers accountable for racist acts and comments, and 5) that more diverse teachers be hired going forward.

As a Guilford resident and the parent of GPS alumni, I believe this change is long overdue. It is also essential that we revise the curriculum to address significant historical omissions and remedy bias. There are many great resources which can guide us in this effort. These conversations should begin now.
