Wouldn’t it be so much more fun and less demeaning to an entire community to have like I don’t know a bee or something as your mascot? Be mindful! Real people are not mascots!!

As someone who grew up in Guilford and is now sending my own kids to Guilford schools, I am appalled that this culturally insensitive mascot is still in place. What does this teach our children? What does it say about Guilford to other towns? Most importantly, what does it say about US as people that we would allow such a disrespectful symbol to continue to represent us, and that we could allow ourselves to continue disrespecting Native people in this way? I know that our town is an amazing, kind, and tolerant place. This is not Guilford.

It’s time to be sensitive to others and let’s not confuse that with “conforming to pc”.

Please change the mascot. A mascot should not be something that anybody finds offensive. A mascot is thought to bring luck to the group it represents. If the mascot is offensive, it certainly can’t be bringing luck.

Time for a change Guilford! Please be on the correct side of this argument. Longevity is not a reason for keeping something that promotes negativity for a race of our fellow human beings.

Finally!! Yes Indians are not mascots. If you want to honor a local tribe and name the school building after their leader and teach their story in school maybe and the tribe agrees then you talk about something Native American in our schools. Other than that, rename teams as an animal. Maybe the Fischer cats!

Do what’s right. Make our mascot a Catgirl.
Tradition is not an excuse for racism.
