The school board confirmed today that the mascot is being retired for good. I am deeply worn out by this fight but relieved that we finally reached the finish line. We should keep an eye on the transition process to make sure the replacement truly reflects our community.

The intolerance and harm promoted by “Indian” sports mascots, logos, or symbols have very real consequences for Native people. Rather than honoring Native peoples, these caricatures and stereotypes are harmful, and perpetuate negative stereotypes of America’s first peoples. Guilford deserves a school mascot that reflects the strength, beauty, and kindness of its town and citizens. We therefore request that the Guilford school mascot be changed.

Former GHS student athlete, class of ‘13. Use of the Indian American as a mascot weaponizes the image of Native Americans for our own personal gain with no reparations to the Native communities. This mascot further contributes to racist stereotypes and is overdue to be changed.
Hello, my name is Michael Roh, a proud alum of GHS '09. I come from a family of first-gen Korean immigrants and have experienced first-hand the harmful consequences of such stereotypes. I humbly but firmly urge you to consider changing our mascot to one that is unquestionably inoffensive and inclusive.
even though i don’t go to ghs, i live in guilford and it’s honestly embarrassing to tell people at my school that guilford’s mascot is the Indians. the mascot only changed to the Indians in 1944, because we were the Rams before that.
I raised 3 children in Guilford, and the use of a stereotype as a mascot is disgraceful. Ironically, I attended a high school that also used 'Indians' as the mascot. They had the good sense to change it. THIRTY YEARS AGO.
2011, track and 4 year varsity soccer player and captain. I am now aware of our ignorance in high school and embarrassed by the days we "dressed up" as Indians for school pride. This needs to change.
The right thing to do is change the mascot.

Proudly voted GHS Most School Spirit Class of 2011. This change is overdue and should be paired with education regarding factual multicultural history, the reason for change, and the importance of change after becoming more educated.
