If you would like to add another sport to Country week such as Basketball, Soccer or Touch Rugby, please sign this petition.

Updates

October 28, 2016

The feedback regarding which sports should be included has been insightful and shows how many of you value a wider range of athletic opportunities. I am currently working on a proposal to outline how these additions could logistically function within our existing schedule. Your interest proves that this is a conversation worth pursuing for the benefit of all participants.

October 28, 2016

Seeing this conversation expand beyond my original expectations has been a quiet surprise. It is clear that many people feel the current athletic program is missing a vital opportunity to better reflect our diverse interests.

I strongly believe that we should change the Country week sport as we are all about being a diverse school yet we only play one sport, and follow the school motto and challenge yourself.

We want to change the sport because everyone should have the opportunity to try out for country week... some people aren't good in volleyball so they don't have a chance, by involving another sport, more people will be involved. to those who think we are getting rid of volleyball we aren't, we just want to participate in other sports other than volleyball. It is mentioned that the volleyball team has gone from C grade to A grade, and that we want to be champions, there’s no purpose in going to A grade if we're just going to come last overall. If new sports are introduced, for example, soccer, many youngsters are currently being trained and have the potential to form a team once they reach high school, as for volleyball it is a sport that gets introduced once kids enter high school.

WE NEED TO CHANGE THIS SPORT TO SOCCER OR BASKET BALL BECAUSE VOLLEY IS JUST TO OLD.

Since this is the most talked about topic in high school during the past week, I’ve heard many different opinions from everyone. Firstly, I think this petition is a great idea (props to whoever started it) because it shows that the people who really want the country week sport to change are actually taking actions. I decided to listen to both sides of the argument before making the decision whether to sign the petition or not. Here’s what I have to say about it: For the students who’d signed the petition and want a different sport, I hope you know what sport you are going to vote for if this petition succeeds because from what I’ve heard, many of you wanted it to be soccer but some of you wanted basketball and a few was hoping that it’d be rugby. Because of that, numerous of people think, why not request for all of the sports above? Well that is because the school won’t be financially able to bring all the teams to Perth to compete. Furthermore, Michaela did mentioned that it was only meant for senior students but we had a special permission on allowing younger students to participate since there are no physical contact between both teams in a volleyball game but as you guys know, for soccer or basketball or rugby, there are going to be many contacts and we don’t know if they’d allow younger students in those sports. Additionally most students in our school are small in size compare to students in mainland, that gives them an advantage in games like basketball but I truly believe that if we were given permission and train diligently, we might have a chance in a higher grade despite the height differences. Now moving on to students who strongly opposed to this petition, most of you have experienced country week and have seen the level of students from mainland play in those sports and thinking how there is only a little chance for us to get to a higher grade than D or E or whatever the lowest grade is, our volleyball teams were once C graders too. Yes it took you a

firstly we don't want the sport to be changed. organisation... we don't want to change anything just give us the same opportunity as you volleyball people. Exactly its basically the same team thats been in the process of building from C to A grade. Therefore, more people are missing out then those in the team. quite frankly you aren't missing out as your positions are already filled and that is evident. The thing is, because you and your team have already got the chance it doesn't effect you. why don't we get the chance to work hard to develop ourselves just like you do? Furthermore, how can we be expected to listen to teachers when they can't even listen to us. It isn't a one way thing. Try seeing things from the perspectives of the people who want another sport INCLUDED, not CHANGED. And then we can see the perspective of the teachers.
