How would YOU feel if you couldn’t go to your senior prom? Every year, the junior class schedules prom so that the maximum number of seniors can attend. This year, however, prom has been scheduled to take place the same weekend as nationals for the We the People competition, which are held in Washington, D.C. This means that 24 seniors and their dates will never get the opportunity to attend their own senior prom, and that many groups will be forced to go without their friends.

The We the People competition is extremely prestigious and our team’s historically strong performances have brought a lot of positive attention to our school. Our team is school-sponsored and all competitions are mandatory. Why should the 24 students who were selected to represent Maggie Walker this year be barred from attending their own prom?

We are requesting that the junior class move prom to a different date that will not have such a negative effect on the Class of 2015’s senior experience. Suggestions include April 18th, May 16th, and May 23rd.

If you support Maggie Walker’s We the People Team XVII, the senior class, and giving all seniors the best prom possible, please sign this petition. We will be presenting it to administration and to the sponsor of the Class of 2016 in order to show that more than just the team cares about this issue. Thank you."
