Please help me get the policy at Westwood Elementary school in Manchester Tennessee changed. Since the beginning of the 2014-2015 school year my grand daughter has been prejudiced.She is chicana...mexican american. The school put her in ESL..english second language..this is for children that need help because they don't speak english. My grand daughter speaks perfect english and spanish. when i questioned this the assistant principal said it isn't necessarily for that ..It is so that Aylin can get one on one with another teacher to give her extra help because they feel she isn't paying attention. I let it slide....then I noticed Aylin wasn't getting to do accelerated reading . i questioned this..The teacher said there was a glitch in system and Aylin didn,t have a number yet..However, her number was clearly marked on her folder and Aylin had had the same book for a month. I stated this to the teacher and next day they tested her.She was told to take test and she failed because no one showed her how to do it nor assisted her in taking it..If they think she is slow they should have helped. So she doesn't take AR tests. They have mini books to read at school. The teacher said they should read 25 by christmas break. Aylin has read 7 or 8 at school. However she has read 25 at home. She will not perform for her teacher because she can tell that the lady does not like her. When a child at age 6 hates school then there is a problem. The teacher wants her on medication and will not help her at all. Aylin doesn't need medication.She needs a teacher that cares that isn't working just for the paycheck. A teacher that genuinely cares about her students. I have begged the school to give her a new teacher. They say it is against policy. I sent a note to the teacher 2 days ago asking her if she has nothing positive to say about Aylin then please refrain from saying anything at all. It is a teachers and schools responsibility to make sure the students have a safe and comfortable learning experience. If you tell someone they are bad everyday then sooner or later they will believe it..a complete idiot can be convinced that they are a brain surgeon if they are told everyday that they are such a wonderful brain surgeon. If the teachers don't try to reach their students and the child fails then ...likewise the teacher is a failure. I have bought the curriculum and i spend 2 hours everyday after school teaching my grand daughter. I see her strengths and weaknesses and i do it with kind loving intentions and she performs marvelously for me and anyone else that is around her. She is polite and well mannered but she is being denied her right to a positive environment to learn in because this school will not give her another teacher even though it is obvious that their is a personality conflict.. We have to tell Aylin everyday that it will be okay. Just try and do what she says and peacefully get through this year because next year you will have a new teacher.. I feel my hands are tied. The policies of the schools should protect the students as well as the teachers. Please sign this petition and help Aylins voice be heard. If their is an obvious problem in a classroom between a student and their teacher then the student needs a right to have a different teacher. I am sure if the teacher felt unsafe she would get a new job or get the child out of the class if the teacher felt intimidated by the student. We have to be a voice for our children . I am asking you please help get this policy changed. Don't let Aylin slip through the cracks. She could be your daughter or grand daughter next year. Ask your self what would you do then?
