Children need more than only book learning, they need compassion, love and nurturing. The death of a cousin, a playmate, or anyone important to a child, must be handled very delicately so as to not permanently harm the child. Attending the funeral is one step in the process, helping the child to say goodbye. The loss is devastating, and not allowing an excused absence to attend a funeral is deplorable!!!

Where is the common sense in your policy? "Blanket" policies are in my mind a cop out. Parents need to decide what is best for their children, not a school or school board.

The KISD funeral attendance policy embodies all that is wrong with this country.

People have too much time on their hands if they're enforcing ridiculous rules like this. The news of Kitty's death has deeply affected the thoughts and feelings of people who didn't even know her around the world. Surely, it would have affected the family (cousin included) 10 fold. Allow children their time to grieve too. It's healthy.

Funerals are very important in the grieving process and should not be denied to a child. Cousins might not be part of the nuclear family but they are an important part of the family and the first friends that a child has.

This policy must be changed. I shouldn't need to explain why, and I too damn mad to try. I will be emailing all my family and friends that use Katy ISD and will contact the no grieving person should have to deal with this. This is ridiculous. Who are you people to say whose funeral a person can attend! Your policy is heartless.

Should be allowed an excuse absent.

Your funeral policy is cruel and inhumane. It is for families to decide which funerals are important for their children to attend. What learning could be more important than paying last respect to your five year-old cousin who tragically drowned. Shameful!

Stop the insanity, KISD. Have some compassion and some #%^$#'ing common sense.

Everything is all about the money. When you watch your evening news and lament at how parents should be teaching their children better yet you as 'officials' keep taking away more and more parental rights. May you never feel the loss of your child or your brother's or sister's child. May you never face an administration so hell bent on policy that you feel as if you have lost control of your children. May you never have to feel what this family is enduring. Have a heart. Be the compassionate ones and sleep better with a clear conscience.

my grandkids attend Katy ISD schools and I will tell you, if a tragic event happened in the family they would miss school! This is a parental decision and not the decision of the school or the government and certainly not something that merits legal action. Let's put some common sense and compassion back into the system. When I attended (many years ago) and when my children attended (not so many years ago) Texas public schools, things were very different. I think different for the better.it is not the schools business to determine which family member is important enough to merit an excused asbense.
