Change Katy Independent School District's Attendance Policy Regarding Funerals

Lighten up, Katy Independent School District. Attending a dear friend's funeral is the human thing to do.

This is absurd that attending a first cousin's funeral is not an excused absence. Likewise, some children have living great grandparents. That too would be a violation. The school district needs to get rid of such absurd restrictions.

These decisions should be made by the parent.

Time to get rid of rules and start using common sense. The funeral of someone 'close' doesn't have to be blood related at all.

This should even be extended to friends

All absences due to funerals of loved ones should be excused. There is no excuse not to allow children to attend any loved ones funeral.

It's called compassion and putting the needs of a child above all. You preach family values yet show disregard. Close friends and classmates included.

The lack of family values and the lack of knowing the value of the family has been and will be the fall of our civilization.

This is a disgrace, as a father who just lost his 8 year old son I am outraged!! Any family member be it a cousin or a brother should be an excused absence period!!!

The lack of compassion shown by this policy once again makes Texas look backwards in the eyes of the rest of the nation. The mindless interpretation of rules, rather than a show of compassion, indicates a total disregard for the feelings of a child during a difficult time.

Compassion and humanity before attendance numbers. What are we showing parents and students if we value their attendance over their pain and suffering? Are they going to want to volunteer in a school system where there is no compassion? And how will this affect the student and his or her ability to learn when they are not allowed to grieve by saying farewell to their loved one. Again I say-- Compassion and Humanity before Attendance numbers. If bereavement is abused by some do not blame all--find a system of checking for truth.

The school said excused and unexcused absences are virtually the same, but that is incorrect because truancy laws do not come into play for excused absences. Whether it is a close or distant family member, or even a good friend, I have discretion at work to take an excused personal day and grieve. If school is to equip our citizens and workforce, parents should be able to exercise discretion.

Read this in an article today, and I agree with this quote from the article, "I would love to see parents and concerned students everywhere demand their boards change this apparently ubiquitous policy to one which is more humane."

My college would not allow me to go to my grandmother's funeral because that would be an unexcused absence, too. I am outraged that schools are allowed to do this. Times need to change.

A policy change needs to be made in ALL schools across the country. The restriction to certain family members is ridiculous and out dated.

Americans are control freaks. Starts with the government and weak minded people defend it. They need to ease up and focus on what's important. I have hundreds, probably over a thousand relatives across the country. That means lots of funerals. Just give the kids the freakin homework and stop trying to ruin their records for college.
