Change Gum — Change the World
Chewing gum is made of 5 different components gum base, flavorings and colorings, preservatives, sweeteners, and softeners. Gum base is the factor in chewing gum that is the most problematic. It is synthetic chicle, or rubber. This rubber does not contribute in anyway to the environment. It is extremely difficult and expensive to remove once "walked in" and dried as it bonds strongly to asphalt and rubber shoe soles being made from polymeric hydrocarbons. Many cities have devoted time and effort to gum removal. This is done with a steam jet and is found to be a slow labor intensive process. Theoretically, since the gum base is the issue, finding a better gum base that is more environmentally friendly will save the world.
The major gum companies as well as the government are not taking steps to make sure a better gum base is found. This should be pushed. It is an easy solution! Join the fight to push for a better gum base!
