Christopher Columbus is not a man who deserves to be celebrated. Columbus did not even discover North America, the Vikings did, so what are we celebrating? A man who did not know how to do his job and thought he was in India and not in Central America. A man whose own country did not want to sponsor his work so instead Spain supported Columbus. A man who killed 80-90% of the indigenous people’s population with disease, whose men raped many indigenous women and started the Trans-Atlantic slave trade with indigenous peoples. This man does not deserve celebration. The indigenous people deserve celebration for their perseverance and to honor those who were lost and went through many hardships caused by Columbus.
