To recognize "Columbus Day" in 2016 is, at best, to endorse a legacy of ignorance and insensitivity. Harvard needs to change now.

The City of Cambridge has agreed to celebrate indigenous people rather than Columbus. Harvard should not drag its feet.

My Native American child attends Harvard, and I insist that Harvar stop referring to this day in celebration of genocide. Please call it Indigenous People's Day!

christopher columbus was a racist and a rapist and a murder, to celebrate a holiday about him is sickening.

I am proud to attend a university that has proven itself a leader in so many fields. Harvard has dropped the ball on this one. A celebration of Columbus is an affront to my very existence.

As a parent of a Harvard student I am extremely disappointed that the university continues to celebrate this man whose life and legacy represents so much heart wrenching pain to the hemisphere's indigenous people.

No one should celebrate a man perpetrated rape, genocide, and crimes against humanity under the guise of Christianity and exploration.

It's unclear to me why Harvard's administration hasn't already done this, and a bit sad that it's now the students' responsibility to push it to do so...

Harvard is better than this. Please listen to your indigenous students' voices and respect their collective historical trauma. Let Harvard lead the way instead of following behind sheepishly as the rest of the nation starts to come to its senses.
