We the citizens would like to change the current City of Thornton (COT) animal code to allow residential possession of chickens.
Many people would like to own their own chickens in order to produce eggs and later meat. Chicken feces has also been proven to aid in decomposition of natural materials, as well as quality manure for lawns and gardens.
Surrounding cities already allow residents to own chickens. The number of chickens owned does vary in each city.
We the citizens purpose the COT allow for residents to own and possess no more then six chicken hens per house hold. All chicken hens must have flight wings clipped, and the owners yards must be fenced in such way to ensure chickens shall not leave the owners property. Further, there must be a secure area for the chicken hens to retire to for the evening to prevent the further gathering of wild animals such as coyotes and foxes. Owners shall follow current COT rules concerning animal feces. No roosters shall be allowed as the noise they make can be disturbing to neighbors, and a rooster is needed only to fertilize eggs for continous chicken growth.
By allowing the possession of chicken hens COT would be keeping current with trends of other surrounding cities both locally and nationwide.

They are the same as any other animal in the back yard! In fact the newborn has a dog and I can't even go near my Fence with that dog! So why is that animal allowed to residence when some chickens are not?
It is great opportunity to teach our kids about the importance of food and the responsibility we all have as it relates to taking care of animals, our planet, and our food independence.
Chickens are many, many times quieter than dogs, and if a chicken gets loose there is a 0% chance it is going to hurt or kill someone.
Backyard chickens are legal in most surrounding suburbs/towns with no issues reported. Proper ownership prevents pests and other common concerns. Restrictions on roosters, placement/size of coop and number of animals is perfectly reasonable. Responsible owners should not be denied this unique and rewarding family experience.
Families in Thornton should have the same right as those living in nearby Westminster and Northglenn to take responsibility for portions of their own food supply. This right will allow residents to monitor the conditions in which at least portions of their food are produced reducing the consumption of unnecessary antibiotics etc.
Kitchener allows it, why not Thornton?

I live in a town in Colorado that does allow 2 laying hens within the city limits per house hold. I would love to see this happen in Thornton CO. This would greatly help those with lower income to have fresh eggs and chicken.
