Change back mode of assessment to Open Book exams for 2025

We believe that the return to closed-book exams for the May assessment is unfair and places unnecessary stress on students, compromising the quality of learning and critical thinking. Open-book exams more accurately reflect real-world scenarios where individuals have access to resources and are expected to apply knowledge rather than rely solely on memorization. Closed-book exams disproportionately reward rote learning over analytical skills and problem-solving, which are essential for academic and professional success. Furthermore, the abrupt shift back to closed-book assessments disadvantages students who have adapted to open-book formats and prepared accordingly especially third year students. We urge the administration to reinstate open-book exams for the May assessment to promote a fairer and more effective evaluation of students’ understanding and application of knowledge.
