Yoga is a holistic practice, largely about accessing true peace...it is considered, meditative & gentle in nature, it is most definitely NOT sport

Thank you for this initiative. I tried in 2012 throughout the year to communicate with ACC about this strange classification for yoga teachers.Atmavidya (Vishuddhi Yoga Centre Cristchurch)

yoga is not a sport, ACC, we should be in a lower risk bracket!

Yoga is primarily practiced as a physical art to help heal the body. It is not only viewed as that within the industry but also in the eyes of the students. Over 90% of our students, who are surveyed have joined our studio to help fix a physical issue caused from another sport/form of physical training or their job. I argue that sitting at a desk is much more injurious on your body and results in many thousands more ACC claims then practicing Ypga could ever do if every person in NZ did it. ACC have a very narrow, biased perspective on healthcare and this example needs rectifying immediately. Thanks

I've never hurt anyone in hundreds of hours of teaching yoga. This makes no sense

ACC need to update their thinking and coding as for the last 30 years of practice and teaching, yoga had never resembled a sport to me.

it is absurd to catergorise yoga with ski & snowboarding instruction yoga has been proven to benefit many health problems in our society today and if it is that dangerous tehn one must question why there are hosipitals tha use yoga as part of their recovery programs. Fancy dance instrucors having to pay lessas weel as high impact aerobic instructors.

Yoga definitely should not be classified by ACC in the same league as skiing and snowboarding. Yoga can also be used to heal injuries and rehabilitate in general!

I'm so grateful Ali brought this to our attention. Let's unify (yoga defined) to create better understanding & a fair platform for yoga businesses. It's already tricky enough staying afloat in this industry without inaccurate fees piled on top!

As a professional yoga teacher with thousands of hours of training and over a decade's experience, I actually use yoga as a rehabilitative tool with folks who've injured themselves doing other things. When offered correctly, Yoga can be the healing mechanism rather than the cause of injury. In most cases, students who practice under the supervision of an experienced and conscientious teacher find that their yoga practice confers greater resilience to their bodies, thereby preventing future injuries when they go do sport, adventure, etc. To be charged a premium levy for the work that I do that actually saves ACC money seems inappropriate and unfair.
