This is kind of disgusting how how yoga instructors are charged... Yoga is a therapeutic practice that has so many mental and physical benefits. Or do they not want our citizens to be healthy and make it less accessible? It seems like they have some kind of agenda to squash yoga!

I think those people who make the decision need to be clarified "WHAT is YOGA"

To be paying more than gym trainers and dance teachers, when I have over the years helped many students rehabilitate from injuries sustained in those practices, is unfair and absurd.

Yoga is a firstly a therapeutic art and should be taught accordingly. If ACC has the statistics to show that yoga currently causes injury to the same extent, in terms of cost per student per unit time, as the other activities in the same Risk Group, then the better solution would be stricter regulation of who can teach yoga. If yoga is taught by appropriately qualified people in appropriate venues and with a good teacher student ratio, it will not cause a substantial injury cost, quite the opposite.

The ACC levies for yoga teachers should reflect that of dance teachers and fitness trainers. Most yoga teachers have an awareness of anatomy and physiology paired with a heightened sense of body awareness which is surely risk averse. From my experience as a yoga teacher I spend far more time using my voice than I do my body to teach so I do not see how this is higher risk than a fitness trainer.

ACC's coding of yoga teaching as being a high risk vocation seems entirely incorrect. It is unimaginable that teaching yoga is almost as high risk in the ACC's eyes as playing professional rugby. I teach yoga to professional rugby players and follow their fortunes and speak from experience. Yoga teachers take care of their bodies and do their physical practice from a position of knowledge so far as alignment principles are concerned. If the ACC is reducing levies for car owners there seems no good reason in logic why the stance in relation to yoga teaching ought not to be revisited and the levies drastically reduced to reflect the low risk of the vocation.

As a yoga instructor I find this coding absolutely ludicrous - to put yoga in a higher risk category than so many other professional categories those of which yoga actually helps to decrease their chances of illness or injury. ACC would be wise to consider promoting yoga more and watch claims go down.

Teaching people to connect with their bodies, enhancing their respitory system, increasing their bodies agility, & enabling them to obtain mental clarity. This is "non-vocational"? What about all the people who yoga practise has prevented injury through understanding of their bodies ability? Yes, it can be dangerous, but as teachers it is our responsibility to know the dangers & to create a safe environment for beings to learn the practise of yoga, learning themselves.❥
