I graduated with Matt in 1987. I remember what his style of drawing looked like. I can say that the design of the bear that matches his other work at the time. I also remember mutual friends talking about how staff from Central had , picked his design. Years later when I have seen literature or signage that has this same design I recognise it as Matt's work.

This is an easy fix and and It will cost next to nothing for the EVSC and Central High School to give credit to Matt Hawes for his artwork whenever it's used.

EVSC, I am a 1987 graduate of Central High School and a classmate of Matt Hawes. He was the artist of our class and he deserves recognition for his bear drawing that he did after asked by Mr. Koehler to draw a new bear back in 1987. I challenge the EVSC to do the right thing as you challenge your students and give Matt credit for his drawing that is proudly displaced at CHS and student clothing.

Angela, I fully agree that all artists deserve and should receive credit. Before my drawing, Central did not have one specific drawing of the mascot that it used. The drawings used before mine came from various sources, sometimes from publications, or clip art files. It was not until my final school year that a committee at the school decided on having an official image of the bear mascot, and that is what they used my art for, and have continued to use that same drawing for almost 30 years now. I am from the Class of 1991. It was not unusual for the school to use the artwork of the students, as you remember, Central has been around for over 100 years. Although I think you should get credit for your work, I also feel that those who went before you and their work was used in earlier publications should also get credit, along with the drawing that was used by the school. Good luck in your endeavors.

Matthew Hawes is one of the strongest talents I have ever met. From his public access series to his incredible artwork to his work as a resident and provider of entertainment and service in Evansville--Matthew is far beyond the term "underrated" and so the lack of respect he has been forced to endure regarding his artwork for Evansville Central High School is appalling.
I think it is high time that the "powers that be" at said high school correctly credit Matthew for his work (which they have willingly continued using over the years) and finally reimburse him for the respect he has been short changed.
Matt, you will always have my support and respect!

It is deplorable for CHS not stand up and credit the rightful artist. They should be PROUD to endorse and acknowledge one of their own who provided many years of his time supporting his high school with his artwork on various forms. Disappointed in you CHS.
