CCSD Magnet Changes

The policy would eliminate the purpose of a magent school and is totally ridiculous.

Please fix this. My zone school is Durango and the terrible thing is that then no school would be special. Colleges would be harder on the people who are zoned for a different school. They do not know that this policy is going to be changed. Also, durango does not have the same caliber of an orchestra as Clark does and orchestra is a big part of my life. I wouldnt be able to see my friends (that are older than me and go to clark) and I woupdnt see any if my friends that are in my grade.Please do not put this policy in place.

We all enrolled in a magnet school for a purpose. Whether that purpose was to have a better education, meet peers, or to be a part of the program of the school itself, we chose it. Putting into effect this mew zoning system would take away that choice. It would also set up future problems for say, a kid that wanted calculus in 12th grade. Would all the schools have a calculus teacher? And would they be a capable teacher of the subject or simply a person giving out worksheets? These magnet changes are not a good decision and must be prevented.

What? Why would you limit education?

Fix this please. There would be no in having magnet schools and there would be no point in taking higher level classes if we are capable of doing so. More gifted children would have to take easier courses which is by no means a valuable thing for their minds. Moreover, less gifted children will have to struggle with a higher level class. If we make this change, everything that students will have worked for will make it useless and it will make greatly affect our careers as magnet schools were meant to be subject-specific.

This policy should not be put into place because it will destroy our education. This policy would change the requirements needed to get into a magnet school. This policy would make it so that all the magnet schools would be of the same level which would mean that there would be noting better about a really high prestigious magnet school over one that isn't. First of all, some of the students who already work hard towards their future, trying to get into Harvard and other Ivy League schools, might not be zoned for a really good magnet school such as clark. Second of all, there are some magnet schools that provide more AP classes than others. Students in my class have already taken 2-4 high school classes (Algebra 1 Honors, Geometry Honors, Biology Honors and Spanish 1), which means that they would take AP classes and they want to take as many as they can. If they zoned for a school that only provides one or two AP classes they wouldn't be able to take the other ones without taking courses at UNLV over the course of that year. Taking courses at UNLV for AP credits would also mean that they would have to pay for them over the AP classes taken at their high school. These are two of the many reasons that this policy shouldn't be put into place.

It's like CCSD doesn't even care for our education. Oh wait, did they even in the first place? If they're doing it just because busing is too expensive, make changes to the busing, not the PROGRAMS.

Ever since I was a child, everybody has been telling me to perform at my best potentional. I lived by that rule, but now, unfortunately this will become a trouble for me. Some schoolschools don't have what kids are looking for so it's not fair to put them there. If people are thriving for la or clark, ththey might not be able to go just because they don't live close enough? That's pathetic. Now schools will be filled with students not of the brightest but of the closest. Think about it, and think smart.

To those who are planning on changing the magnet school system, you guys are idiots. After more than a year at a magnet middle school, I know that I had a kickstart in my career. Magnet schools allow students from all over to enjoy a great learning environment. These so-called "advanced" classes are a bit easy, and easy doesn't cut it. Las Vegas is known for having simply horrible education, and this will make it worse. I don't care if it costs money to operate busses. Education is more important than transportation!

Where does a gifted thinker fit in among a school district of a state ranked 50th in the nation? The answer to this question is simple. They don't. Not without the existence of our current magnet programs. A student taking Pre-Algebra 8 in 6th grade is on a path that will allow them to take Algebra I (9th grade) level in 7th grade and Geometry (10th grade) in 8th grade. That's two years above where they should be according to Nevada state standards. This means that without the existence of specialized programs, students will be forced into their ordinary zoned schools and will probably be spending their school days as the only freshmen in math classes filled with juniors. This is a huge issue because it makes this gifted student choose between being with peers and developing strong social/communication skills or being in a class that taught content more at their level, and both social/communication skills and academic are vital to being successful in the real world. This is why it is absolutely essential that we keep our existing magnet programs that allow us to be challenged in an environment that is suited for us.

I HATE ZONING!

This policy should not be enacted and will stunt our educational growth significantly and will effect all of our lives detrimentally. For the benefit of all students in Clark County, stop this madness now. Ruining fantastic schools simply because you are too incompetent to make your own even mediocre ones would not just. The primary objective of funding in the district should be towards education. Things really need to change around here if the district does not wish to continue to be laughed at on a national level.

This is unfair to the whole Clark County. Public schools were built under the core principles of the fairness and availability of education. Right now, those principles are still being upheld. In fact, if these changes do not go into place, students will be able to enjoy a wider range of education, from fine arts to science to piloting. However, if this movement is implemented, this myriad of learning will become a monotonous uniform of standards. This robs kids of a fair chance at a proper education. It goes directly against the core principles by denying students their choice of education and forcing upon them material they do not want. Gifted kids should not waste their hard work by teaching other students, but work with each other to better themselves. After all, isn't education what this is all about? And, with education, like anything else, you get out what you put in. Why should those who put more in be punished by getting a smaller amount out? These changes will prevent learning, and, therefore, the betterment of society. Each of the kids who works hard and studies will get something out of it, so why shouldn't they be able to choose what they put in and what they get out? By eliminating specialized magnet schools, Clark County will have gained a communist set of rules, where a controlling body gives everyone a fair amount of everything, regardless of work ethic. Why would anyone support a communist system, after everything we as a nation have done to create a fair and individually rewarding system dating back to Washington crossing the Delaware? If you want to directly oppose everything our forefathers died for and everything our military IS fighting and dying for, support these changes. However, if you have common sense and care about the future of our society, allow kids to learn as they wish and the best and vote NO.

Although I completely disagree, I'm signing this for other people.

Each magnet school specialize in different areas and are very different from each other, they can't all be the same and not be unique. It would affect many schools reputations and impact many of our careers!

Don't faile to raise the ceiling for those already well above the floor.Public education’s neglect of high-ability students doesn’t just deny individuals opportunities they deserve. It also imperils the country’s future supply of scientists, inventors and entrepreneurs.
