In an effort to counter-act Community Board 7’s food deserts, high-obesity rates, lack of access to fresh food, and general poor quality of life, I propose a Food Access Committee be developed. This Food Access committee will be different from other committees (Health, Economic Development, Long-Range Planning, etc.) in that the committee’s focus will be on our Community Board 7’s access to fresh food. Some projects will include: Work to map and effectively place “Green Carts” in the CB7 area allowing residents access to fresh food. Discussion with FreshDirect as to why it does not service the CB7 area. Work with the Webster Rezoning Committee to effectively place a grocery store to eliminate “food deserts” in that section of the Community Board. Educate the public by working with Electeds about food choices and food access in their communities (Ex. I have emailed Naomi Rivera about showing “Food Inc.” as a “Movie on the Mosh.” this coming summer). Work with the “Bronx Green Up” while ensuring that “Community Gardens” are accessible to all in the CB7 area. Work with the Norwood CSA/ CB7's  farmer’s markets in creating a bigger base for their services. Work with area grocery stores, so they can offer CB7’s residents high-quality produce and high-quality (even organic, free-range, humanely-raised -- A CHOICE) products. CB7's  residents deserve choice. This Food Access committee will work to give CB7 residents a voice in what their area grocery stores offer. Work with CB7’s grocery stores in obtaining Food Retail Expansion to Support Health (FRESH) program incentives. - Ensure that grocery stores in the CB7 area are adhering to ethical standards by working with the NYC Department of Consumer Affairs regarding their recent “SuperMarket Sweep” study. If you agree, please sign this petition.
