A plea for caution before changing bacterial names in databases

There is a document which should always be respected: International Code of Nomenclature of Prokaryotes. In this case especially rule 56a (5). A perilous name (nomen periculosum), i.e., a name that the application is likely to lead to accidents endangering health or life or of serious economic consequences. Example: Yersinia pseudotuberculosis subsp. pestis (Opinion 60; Judicial Commission) is to be rejected as a nomen periculosum. Not to do this might have severe consequences for the patient. ANI-based nomenclature alone is not the solution.

This is a serious issue - one cannot expect everyone to keep up with "scientifically accurate names". Constant re-naming causes confusion for medical experts reading lab reports, causing delay in patient treatment!

I support this request because changes in bacterial nomenclature may affect clinicians' interpretation of diagnostic microbiology results. While clinicians are generally not up-to-date with the latest microbiological and taxonomic knowledge, name changes may pose the rsik of serious consequences for patient care (both, under- and overtreatment, caused by misconception of the clinical report). For this and other already named reasons, renaming should therefore only be implemented when truly justified.

Implementation of the practices outlined in the LoRN would allow for much more effective 'debate' before acceptance of proposed name changes.

Labor, Mikrobiologen und Kliniker benötigen insbesondere eine eindeutige und kontinuierliche Bezeichnung von Pathogenen zur Bestimmung von zugrunde liegenden Krankheitsbildern.

The same is true for viruses!!!
