I am afraid this is all incorrect. John Ingram was certainly a strong example of faithfulness, but the story propagated here of his studentship, conversion, and ministry is complete pious imaginative fabrication. The truth is more compelling than the myths. He never went to Oxford (That was a different 'John Ingram' who was born 17 years earlier), he never ministered in the North of England or the borders region of Scotland - his ministry was in the region of Dundee in Scotland. He was captured on the Tweed escaping from an anti-Catholic pogrom in Scotland (The reformation in Scotland was unlike that in England), and his entire life in England as a priest was as a prisoner. Fr Paul Zielinski's book, published in our own diocese of Hexham and Newcastle, is a well-researched story of Blessed John Ingram, and debunks the pious myths about him. Blessed John Ingram deserves canonisation. His true story is more powerful than the myths propagated by well-meaning pious advocates. He is a saint. The fact that there are those advocating the canonisation of an imaginary version of the man does no service to him , to the church or to the faithful

Blessed John Ingram was undoubtedly a Martyr for the Faith and deserves our recognition. He is a 'Northern Martyr' having been martyred in Gateshead. ( he was tried at Durham assizes alongside St John Boste who ministered in Cumbria and Durham, and George Swalowell from Houghton, after they were tortured at the Tower of London). However, beware of adding myths to his legacy. There is absolutely no evidence whatsoever that John Ingram 'ministered to the people of the north-east of England'. His entire ministry in Britain was in Scotland whence, notwithstanding the very different nature of the reformation in Scotland to the English reformation, he fled an anti-Catholic riot by skipping over the border to Wark-upon-Tweed, where he remained for less than a day before attempting to return to Scotland where he had been supported by local nobility. Unfortunately he was caught by English officials attempting to re-cross the border near Norham castle to return to Scotland. There was never any evidence of him ministering in England, but an English man taking Holy Orders as a Catholic Priest was, in Elizabethan English law, guilty de facto of high treason and had only one fate. Despite the fact that he had never ministered in England, and the efforts of some sympathetic Scots to ransom him, his fate was sealed. Let us remember him as a Martyr for his Faith, but please do not garnish his legacy with fanciful stories about what we would like to think he had done.

Blessed John Ingram local priest and maryter pray for our Catholic Church and for the clergy and lay people today that they would have the same unshakable faith and bravery to stand united for the truth of the one true Catholic faith in Christ Jesus in our world today. Amen
God knows that he s a saint but we should be able to let that be known here on earth

I am very surprised that he has not been canonised, remember being taught about him in school over sixty years ago.
There was also a pageant in Newcastle upon Tyne city hall about sixty years ago abut the English martyrs,(I took part in it)
