This past year, the University of Vermont (UVM) handed out diplomas to well over a thousand matriculating students. Despite the years of effort and the (ever-raising) cost of attendance, all of the students were handed diplomas that made no mention of either the major or minor of any of the students involved. It seems ludicrous that each of us was made to pick a major and a minor, or two majors, but that our individual courses of study go undocumented on our diplomas, which are the only tangible evidence of our accomplishments at UVM. We all know that the UVM Chatty Cats are going to start calling us to donate money to the institution, but why ought anyone to donate to an institution that can institute two tuition hikes over the course of a four-year course of study and then be so caring (read: thoughtless) as to neglect to put even a minimum of effort into the one item the Administration affords the students across their entire time at the University? In the spirit of respect for the hard work of others, UVM should reprint the diplomas for the class of 2012 (and any other class whose diplomas were left so bereft of student-specific information) and send them out to students so that they can have a decent record of the monumental effort required to finish any course of study at UVM.
