Attention CASLV Parent-Student Community:

We are writing to address the ongoing challenges and issues we have observed and experienced with the Sports Program administration at CASLV Sandy Ridge campus. CASLV's core values are respect, responsibility, and honesty, among others. Our charter school's leadership and educators make great efforts to partner with parents and students to create a safe and supportive environment for our tight-knit community. The school's sports program is a tremendous contribution to the growth and well-being of students, benefiting the participating athletes and inspiring school spirit in the student body as a whole. However, the Sports Program's current organization and communication practices have become a significant obstacle for our children to grow, gain experience, and learn.

Throughout the past year, we have observed the following:

  • During the past season, we noticed an alarming disparity in practice time distribution for gym time use. One particular sport monopolized the prime practice slots, leaving little to no opportunities for other teams to access the facility;
  • A severe lack of communication from the Athletic Director, including a lack of coordination for practice times and meeting times with coaches, no-shows to essential meetings with parents/students, and non-responses to requests from parents and coaches;
  • Disorganization and inconsistency in administering facilities-use during the season and for summer-time use, ordering uniforms, and organizing equipment for different sports teams;
  • Deficient safety protocols for students: trainers are not present at games;
  • A lack of transparency, support, and accountability regarding team finances, fundraising efforts, handling of concession stand sales, and recording of games (an expensive service parents pay for);
  • Insufficient oversight of the maintenance and care of facilities, particularly the gym floor, the state of which diminishes its functionality and increases the potential for serious injury to students;
  • Inadequate support of the coaches and sports teams: the A/D is not present at games as required of the position, and administrative personnel are inconsistently assigned to be present at games for the safety of the crowd and players;
  • A lack of effort in remedying the above challenges and dereliction of duties: there have been no significant improvements despite multiple correspondences with administration from parents and students.

After numerous attempts to raise concerns with leadership, we have been met with a disappointing lack of accountability, communication, and support. It is disheartening to witness such a disregard for equal opportunities and disinterest in redeeming obvious gaps in professionalism and duty of care.

We firmly believe that this situation can and should be rectified by ensuring those in leadership adhere to the high standards of professionalism, competency, and care that CASLV's educators and staff are held to. By proactively implementing transparent communication, efficient organization, and proficiency, we can nurture meaningful relationships among coaches, students, and parents, fostering a supportive community that values and prioritizes the development of all participants.

We urge you to join us in taking a stand against the current state of affairs and supporting improvements within the athletic department's administration. Together, we can bring awareness to the Governing Board and other leadership and advocate for a more equitable and inclusive environment at Coral Academy and for more efficient, effective, supportive, and professional leadership. Let's work towards CASLV's mission of providing students "with the support necessary to reach their highest potential--intellectually, socially, emotionally and physically."
