Carmen Vega-Rivera was a tireless educator and community organizer. For sixteen years she lead the East Harlem Tutorial Program. Through her innovative vision, she created a program that was a support system for the many children of East Harlem. Through literacy, the arts, and cultural identity, Carmen provided a sanctuary and programming that set a course and standard for other after school programs around the nation. Graduates of the program have gone on to live full, productive lives thanks to her and the team of educators she brought together. We the undersigned, want to honor her legacy of unconditional love for the East Harlem community as an educator, mentor and friend. We want to see the NE corner of East 105th Street, and 2nd Avenue, in Manhattan to be renamed Carmen Vega-Rivera Way.

The city council continues to dodge our emails and ignore the legacy Carmen built for our neighborhood. They think we will eventually get tired and move on to something else but they are dead wrong. We are organizing a direct presence at their next session to make sure they can no longer pretend this street naming petition does not exist.

She deserves it she help a lot people from L.E.S and the Bronx and she was my Art teacher at the Henry street settlement back in 1975 .she deserves to be honored she one of a kind .Carmen you well always be in my heart .Yoly
Carmen taught me lessons in 1997 that I remember clearly over 20 years later. She was a positive force of change in her community, and I would love to see her memory honored in this way.
She helped change the world. One kid at a time. Carmen played such a detrimental role in my life. My youth development. My professional development and the way I love at a time when i needed it most. She not only blessed me but my entire family
Carmen positively touched the lives of so many children who grew up to leaders in our community. She was a force of nature. She was admired by all. The city of New York needs to recognize our “sheroes”. Please the name the street in her honor. Sara Manzano-Díaz
Carmen Vega-Rivera was one of the first community leaders I encountered in East Harlem, she could talk to everyone and could inspire everyone, it was a pleasure to volunteer and grow at EHTP
Carmen will forever be an incredible Mentor who saw in me what I couldn't see in myself for that I will forever be grateful and indebted to her memory.
