The administration has officially agreed to revert to a lecture-based curriculum and implement a simplified paper-based assignment system. We have secured a meeting with the department head to ensure these changes are fully integrated before the next term begins.

I believe that using Canvas/Instructure as a primary teaching platform is not working. I can understand the appeal to teachers to be able to just make assignments and cite videos for us to watch. This makes it a whole lot less stressful on the teacher, but where there is leisure and comfort for teachers, many of the student’s grades are being affected negatively. I think that used correctly, this website could be very useful as a teacher’s supplement. As it is being used now, students are overwhelmed trying to keep account of too many assignments. The website is showing zeros for assignments that I was never instructed to complete. On top of that, even when I am assigned assignments, there are so many assignments showing (including completed, due, and future assignments) that it stresses me out just to log onto the website. If you think that Canvas should be removed from our teaching platform and we should go back to vocal lessons by the teacher and paper assignments handed out daily as assigned, or at least have the Canvas/Instructure simplified, then sign your name below. If you know another student who may have constructive opinions to share, invite them to our discussion.

Updates

April 8, 2014

The volume of support has reached a level where the administration can no longer ignore these concerns. I am currently drafting a formal letter to the department heads to request a meeting regarding these platform issues.

I believe that canvas is just a waste of time because there are time when canvas is not working to the best of its abilities. There have been many complaints that grades have not been going through so therefore a bunch of the students are getting 0's for grades they should actually have a passing grade on.

My teacher has stopped teaching as much since she has found canvas. I can't keep up with modules since i don't have a computer at home. She says to come in and make it up but I only have one parent and between my little brothers baseball and her work she can't take me early or pick me up late and there's other classes I have to also take care of during the school day. It's extremely stressful

I completely agree with this, many of the teachers don't know how to use canvas, or are relying on it way too much. The amount of assignments I have on canvas is insanely high and I'm only enrolled in one class! For any teachers reading this, canvas is not an excuse to stop teaching,or assign piles of homework for "Helpful Review". I'm not saying canvas is 100% bad but you know the saying... "Too much of a good thing..."

I don't find canvas the best way to teach a class. Imputing a little technology in a class isn't a big deal, but it isn't an excuse to stop teaching. Canvas isn't an efficient replacement to teaching in class. It just makes everything more complicated to get work done, especially if you don't have a computer.

Some people don't have a computer at home and most of the time so many people are on the school wifi at once it takes a while class block to open the module. and it is very stressful to keep up with. we have twice as much work as we did when it was on paper.

I believe Canvas is a way for teachers not to teach. They think that by giving it to us in a module will teach it to us. I like being taught in a lecture more because I can retain more information then learning it by watching a 30 minute video and taking a quiz on it while I watch the video. Also my grades have been negatively affected by grades not going through and I have gotten zeros for those grades.
