I don't believe that we should have midterms this year since not only have we not have school, but on the days we do have school, classes are empty and most teachers are not there.

One of the primary (if not the, the primary) issues that truly and deeply bothers me about our school system (especially here in our Loudoun County) is that we are all too entirely dependent on a “standardized” testing that is supposedly fair and supposedly is an attempt to gauge a student’s understanding and capabilities. However, testing one’s intelligence and testing one’s capacity and capability to learn are two completely different topics. I believe that a school should be a sanctuary that seeks to nurture the growth of an individual and expose them to the wonders of education and its benefits. Through the encouragement of questioning the limit and asking the students to shed light into many of the problems that the world is plagued with today will give the student a much more rewarding experience and truly show his commitment to change the world. However, the concept of objective testing severely limits this potentiality and is more so a way to categorize a student, almost bearing the same resemblance as factory workers scanning products from a manufacturing line; the students with D’s and F’s are seen more as defects and we immediately feel the urge to classify them as the “unintelligent” or the “unwilling.” This concept is so far from the truth that it literally causes my heart to cringe. How can something as intangible as one’s intelligence be grasped; it is purely ignorant to take a matter that is so subjective and view it with an objective perspective. Thus, it is not so that student’s feel that they’re being challenged with these tests; rather it is a race in which everyone is trying to triumph the other. There is no sense of wonderment about all the things being taught to us. Students these days rarely follow their passion and would rather scan their books for potential test questions in which that information can be useful. And what is our reward to such efforts? A letter grade? An arbitrarily placed glyph that supposedly establishes credibility as to

I do not feel prepared at all to take these upcoming midterms due to the lack of time that I've had with my teachers the past few weeks.

I missed all but Friday last week because of the weather, and so did many others! We are not prepared for these and do not have enough to prepare for them. Actions must be taken to cancel midterms
