In the future, perhaps both February and April vacation weeks could be cancelled with no March vacation week (meaning eight more days of class), but I think that will happen only if the school year is extended from 180 to 190 or 195 days.
Let school districts only need to have 170 days of class this year!
This is a one-time problem.

There's another solution:
The Massachusetts Department Of Education should issue an order allowing K-12 school districts to end the 2014-2015 academic year after 170 days of class instead of the usual 180.
I believe that after a snowy winter in 1968-69 and the blizzard year of 1977-78, the Department of Education cut the academic year to 175 days.
Given the very snowy winter, cutting the school year to 170 days might be the way to go.
Besides, many municipal laws and teacher contracts prevent the school year from going past June 30th since July 1st is the start of a new fiscal year.
Additionally, many school buildings (especially older ones) don't have air conditioning. That could be a major problem if classes go into July.
And the week of July 4th is the week when most Americans go on Summer vacation. That could pose problems for families who may already have put down big deposits for family vacations that week.
This year's winter blitz probably won't happen again in any of our lifetimes, so this one-time solution should be implemented.

I am a child therapist and also work with families. It is already bad enough that our children's education has taken a hit with snow days, which we can not control, but we can control weather more days of during this snowy season is allowed. As it is, many school systems will not continue school into July regardless of how many snow days since they just are not equipped to handle the heat. Please cancel February Vacation so we do not continue to compromise the children's education further. Thank you

If this keeps up most of the flights south will be cancelled anyway. Better now than in April.

What about the staff and families that have already booked and paid for vacations? What would it cost school districts to pay for substitutes for all of the unavailable staff? I believe the answer is to no longer have February and April vacations. Just have 1 week in March like the private schools.

canceling the vacation in February runs a huge risk of more snow days!! You would then have canceled the vacation and also have to cancel the make up days when it snows next week...and you know it will
