It's time to hold elected officials to the same standards of conduct that apply to other public officials (such as appointed commissioners and committee members). We, the petitioners demand the creation of an eleven-member elected ethics commission in the City of Carson, CA. The primary duty of the ethics commission would be to establish the procedure and policy needed to enforce the Carson Code of Ethics (Section 2450, Carson Municipal Code). Members of the ethics commission would be subject to the same rules of conduct as any elected official in the State of California and must follow the same procedure that any candidate for elected office is required to follow to run for office. Penalties for violation of state and local ethics laws may include a letter of admonishment up to a resolution of censure. Acts requiring removal from office is subject to state law governing recall of elected officials and usually has a higher burden of proof. We, the citizens of Carson, CA. demand that our elected officials be held to a higher standard of conduct and that current law dosen't provide for sanctions against elected officials for violation of local laws governing their conduct on and off the dias.
