My name is Araia G. Ephrem, and I am a proud Eritrean-American residing in Oakland, California. When I say I am a proud Eritrean-American, I have witnessed the growth, development and contributions of the people of Eritrea in the Diaspora, within Eritrea and in the East African region at large. Eritrea had become the oasis of peace and development in the region. My first trip to Eritrea was in 1993; shortly after the declaration of Eritrea’s independence on May 24, 1993. At the time I realized the tremendous task that Eritrea as a new nation had to go through and I literally prayed to God/Allah to give the nation the strength. However, when I traveled to Eritrea in 1995; the nation was promoted from miserable to poor in a very short time. I was curious and traveled across the nation. I saw old, young, toddlers and every citizen working very hard on nation building. I traveled to the furthest borders of Eritrea and I saw a similar pattern. I saw people working very hard to develop a new nation. To my surprise, the National Service was declared in 1994. The results of which was a zeal to develop Eritrea in all aspects of life. I was genuinely taken and visited the Sawa camps. Everyone that I talked to in the camps and working on the fields were very focused in what they do best; i.e. developing Eritrea. During my trip to Eritrea in 1995, I became enthused with the National Development and followed all Sawa activities. I studied the National development program carefully. I have not witnessed anything wrong with the program. Nor did I witness any youth getting abused or exploited. In fact, I witnessed a hopeful chapter in Eritrean development history despite a meager GDP. I saw farmers living further from the main cities plough their land in peace and hope that they would instate food security. I witnessed women who had no privilege to reach clinics were reaching adequate health centers. I witnessed teachers reach further out than the main city premises and
