Dear Members of the UN Human Rights Council, and Members of the Commission of Inquiry on the Human Rights Situation in Eritrea: Permit me to express freely my opinion and personal observation regarding the Commission of Inquiry’s (COI) report on Eritrea, which I find to be completely opposite to the realties on the ground in Eritrea. My observation is based on facts and objective conditions in Eritrea, which I regularly visit for long periods over the past 24 years since independence. Eritrea is a very peaceful country. It faces tremendous challenges due to the “no-peace, no-war” situation because Ethiopia refuses to abide by international law and is occupying sovereign Eritrean territories. This imposes tremendous challenges on the whole society as Ethiopia continues to threaten war. The National Service (NS), therefore, should be seen in this context. However, I have witnessed the youth of Eritrea in NS being demobilized, many of my close relatives and acquaintances included. The COI report’s allegation to the contrary, the NS volunteers see themselves as participating in the defense and development of their country, not in “slave” or “forced” labor. Thousands have gained valuable skills and technical knowhow, and still many others are able to continue their education. Women in Eritrea are making tremendous strides in terms of equality and participation in various professions. The law is in favor of women’s rights. The allegations of systematic sexual violence and rape against women in NS are completely unfounded and baseless. In fact, women receive favorable treatment and affirmative action at all levels of social, economic and political activities. As a woman myself, I am very proud of the achievement of the Eritrean woman, and the protection of her rights under the law, and in practice in daily life. The progress of Eritrea in terms of fundamental social, economic, cultural and political changes for the better continues to impress me every time I visit. I
