CALL TO ACTION

To: HENRICO COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS

As you know, the Department of Education denied accreditation for three elementary school in Henrico County. The Board of Supervisors amended the budget to provide $400,000 for the Dream Academy and the School Board selected Highland Springs Elementary, a school that is conditionally accredited, as the sole recipient of this program, funding, and new positions for instructional assistants in Reading and Math. These types of resources are greatly needed at Montrose, Glen Lean, and Ratcliffe Elementary schools.

It is discouraging to read in the Richmond Times Dispatch what is being done for other schools while hearing nothing regarding specifics for additional resources for the three elementary schools denied accrediation. I am asking the Board of Supervisors to earmark at least $150,000 to be split evenly among Montrose, Glen Lea, and Ratcliffe Elementary schools to provide additional instructional assistants in Reading and Math as well as other resource towards increasing SOL performance. Additionally, I am requesting the funding to remain earmarked each year for these schools until they have successfully met accreditation for three consecutive years.

This request not only helps the county to achieve accreditation in all elementary schools but will help with accreditation at the middle schools, such as John Rolfe, who receives students from Montrose.

I look forward to hearing the decision to provide this funding.
